For sometime now there was speculation that Conor McGregor would be returning the first quarter of 2020. Conor actually said as much while on his whiskey tour in Russia. He said he would be returning on January 18th in Las Vegas and that the two potential opponents were Justin Gaethje or Cowboy Cerrone-with Cerrone being the frontrunner. Dana had repeatedly stated that no deal was close to being done and time just kept ticking away.
We then found out that the first PPV of the year, UFC 246, would actually be headlined by Jon Jones in defense of his LHW title against Dominick Reyes in February in Houston. Once that was announced, it seemed to put an end to the possibility of Conor returning in January.
However, mysteriously the UFC website was edited and Jones vs Reyes taken down completely under the schedule for UFC 246. This started to have fans wondering was it just another mistake on the UFC website(site is good for that and awful) or was it a sign that something could be in the works?
Well here at Pureevilmma.com we have just found out from a report from Brett Okamoto of ESPN that Conor McGregor is indeed returning on January 18th and will take on Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in the Main Event of the new UFC 246. According to Dana White, “Conor has signed and Cowboy is ready to go.”
It is interesting to note that this fight will take place at 170 pounds. In my opinion that is a huge risk by Conor McGregor, who with a win, could be angling for a matchup with Jorge Masvidal or maybe the much anticipated trilogy with Nate Diaz. That is the latest so keep it locked to Pureevilmma.com and Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
