Late last night Cowboy posted a mysterious photo on his Instagram teasing MMA fans saying he was going to be taking a fight on short notice but left out his new opponent.
This sent the MMA “twitter world” on fire with everyone taking shots at potential opponents with Showtime Pettis being the most popular guess meaning Nate Diaz would have backed out.
Yet around midnight news broke from UFC President Dana White via Yahoo Sports that Cowboy would actually be fighting #6 ranked Lightweight Justin Gaethje at UFC Vancouver as the headliner aired on ESPN+ September 14th.
Gaethje has been the only fighter in history to win a “Fight Of The Night” bonus in every one of his fights inside the octagon since being signed from WSOF (Now PFL).
Cowboy now 36 years old is still ranked 4th inside the LW division which is considered to be the most stacked weight class in the world so it really doesn’t look like he will be slowing down anytime soon! Cowboy was racking up a bunch of wins over Al Iaquinta and up and coming prospect Alexander Hernandez before his most recent loss vs Tony Ferguson just weeks ago.
Win or lose fans are guaranteed a potential fight of the year contender between two of the most exciting fighters of all time!
