Recently Yoel Romero told Ariel Helwani on his show that he will be fighting Jacare Souza next. He stated the reason he would not be fighting Paulo Costa is because Costa got popped by USADA. This led Chris Weidman to tweet “if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it is probably a duck. #USADA #costa”. As Controversial as that tweet is, the comment section revealed when Weidman would be fighting next. Damien Brown asked Weidman when he would be back in the Octagon. Weidman responded with “Hopefully summer”.
Before his knockout loss to Souza, Weidman choked out Kelvin Gastelum. Gastelum will be fighting Isreal Adesanya for the interim title in Atlanta Georgia on April 13th. The Romero-Souza fight will be in Sunrise, Florida on April 27th. The UFC will want whoever wins the interim belt to fight Robert Whittaker next to unify the middleweight belt. That fight will likely take place this summer, right when Weidman plans to make his return. The good news is that he could rematch the winner of Romero-Souza in a number one contender fight on the same card as the unification fight. It would be a reasonable rematch for either man. The Romero fight ended by a flying knee that was very close to being illegal, and Souza was losing his fight with Weidman decisively before landing a shot that knocked out Chris. If the timing doesn’t work for the number one contender fight, he could fight Derek Brunson next. Brunson is on a 2 fight losing streak, and has a great wrestling background. He is also ranked number 8 in the middleweight division where Weidman is ranked number 6. The question will be, does the UFC want to make Weidman work a little more to get back into the title picture.
