Is a TBI ruining Matt Hughes’ life

Recently Matt Hughes has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. It has been reported that both his wife and his brother have taken restraining orders out on him in the past few months. Back in the summer of 2017 Matt was hit by a train while he was in his truck. This accident left Hughes with a laundry list of issues. His wife Audra reported that after he recovered from the accident in October 2017, Hughes and his wife got into a disagreement. Audra stating that she would not give Matt his keys, telling him that he cannot drive with the brain injury he sustained in the wreck. He then allegedly choked his wife and asked her for the code to his gun safe. She also says that on another occasion in December of 2018, where Audra accused Matt of talking to other women. That resulted to Matt allegedly punching his wife in the face in front of both her son and daughter. This is what she states led to her getting a restraining order on her husband.

Matt’s brother Mark says that their dispute was over the ownership of his tractor. Matt believed that the tractor belonged to him. In September of 2018 just a few months before the incident with his wife, Matt saw Mark’s son driving the tractor. He then pulled the boy off the tractor and begin to shake him yelling “this is my fucking tractor”. One week later Mark says that he believes Matt poured gasoline all over the tractor in attempts to destroy it. That is when Mark stepped in and took out a restraining order on his own brother.

Matt’s wife says that Matt suffers from DAI ( diffuse axonal injury) since his wreck in 2017. DAI is a type of TBI or traumatic brain injury. 90% of people that suffer from DAI do not ever regain consciousness. The 10% that do are never the same after they sustain the injury. A lot of TBI is closely related to unknown sources of anger. If the frontal lobes of your brain are damaged, it may make it more difficult to “apply the breaks” on emotional responses. People that do suffer from anger issues due to their TBI, feel embarrassed or distressed after their actions.

There is no known cure for these type of brain injuries. It is very possible that Matt Hughes does not suffer from any anger issues related to his TBI. Maybe he just does not like his wife or his brother anymore. Its something to keep an eye on though when you look into the story. Not to sympathize with the guy, but if this is all because of a brain injury that he had no control over, it truly is an extremely sad story.
