The City of Brotherly Love will host its third UFC Mixed Martial Arts event on the 30th of March this year. Only twice before has the Ultimate Fighting Championship held fight cards in the home city of the mythical Rocky Balboa – for UFC 101 and UFC 133.
“UFC on ESPN 2: Barboza vs. Gaethje” is not a Pay-Per-View and does not feature a title fight. But nonetheless, the scheduled main event has the potential to be a Fight Of The Year candidate.
Edson “Junior” Barboza will face Justin “The Highlight” Gaethje in the main event for a 5-round bout. This contest is a work of brilliant matchmaking and it should prove to be a real treat to fight fans, both hardcore aficionados and casual fans alike.
Barboza and Gaethje have longstanding reputations as action fighters with fan-friendly styles – both of whom are known for spectacular offense, exceptional toughness and their unconditional willingness to go to war.
This will be the first UFC event in Philly during the “UFC On ESPN” era. The Ultimate Fighting Championship never once visited Philadelphia during its seven-year partnership with Fox Sports.
The last UFC show held in Philadelphia, UFC 133, was a Pay-Ver-View event for which 2 of the prelims aired on Spike TV.
No preliminary bouts aired on broadcast television for UFC 101.
Tickets for UFC on ESPN 2 will go on sale to the general public on February 8, 2019.
